Porn Addiction: What’s Really Going On?
Is problematic pornography use simply a matter of pleasure-seeking and poor self-control, or might something deeper be at work? In this article, I explore the neuroscience and psychology of problematic pornography use, examining how unmet relational needs, emotional distress, and limiting beliefs about ourselves can contribute to compulsive behaviours. Drawing on our fundamental human need for connection, I consider how pornography can become a coping strategy that ultimately reinforces the very distress it seeks to alleviate. Rather than approaching these behaviours through shame and moral judgment, I propose a compassionate, relational approach that emphasizes self-understanding, acceptance, and meaningful change.
